Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea is a genus of flowering plants native to South America from Brazil west to Peru and south to southern Argentina. An estimated 18 species in the genus exit.

Vernonia cinerea

Known locally by the name Monarakudumbiya (මොණරකුඩුම්බිය) which roughly translates to ‘the crest of the peacock’. Vernonia is a genus of about 1000 species of forbs and shrubs in the family Asteraceae. Most of them are known for having intense purple flowers. Several species such as the one in the picture has medicinal value with several uses attributed to it, including: diabetes, fever reduction, and recently a non-pharmaceutical solution to persistent fever, headache, and joint pain associated with AIDS.
